Courtney Love

Although she has received acclaim for her acting, Courtney Love remains best known for her work in the band Hole, a pivotal 1990s alternative rock band. An inimitable presence on stage, she blazed a trail for women-led rock bands—blending rock, punk, folk, and new wave across a series of albums that spoke to a generation.

Love led a troubled childhood, supporting herself by stripping and acting in small film roles. By the late 1980s, she had settled in Los Angeles and taught herself guitar. There she formed Hole, a proto-grunge rock band that was an immediate underground success upon the release of their debut, 1991’s Pretty on the Inside.

Love continued her musical career following her marriage to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in 1992. Live Through This (1994) proved uncannily prophetic of Cobain’s untimely death later that year. This aggressive—yet moving—album represents an artistic high-point in Love’s career, eventually selling over a million-and-a-half copies. Love released a solo album, America’s Sweetheart, in 2004 and has since continued acting and performing.
