Some call him Ziggy Stardust, others the Thin White Duke, and many more simply credit him as rock’s greatest chameleon. No matter the descriptor, David Bowie was truly one of the most enigmatic and idiosyncratic artists ever, accented by touches of glam, punk, flamboyance, androgyny, and sophistication.

The journey began with a simple call of “Ground Control to Major Tom” in the late 1960s, took a trip through The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust… in the ’70s, and was followed by a soulfully debonair Let’s Dance reinvention in the ’80s. Throw in a short detour as frontman for the band Tin Machine, several progressive ’90s solo projects—plus some acting along the way—and it’s safe to say he was amongst music’s most versatile performers.

The turn of the century saw Bowie inspiring new generations, and 2013’s surprise album The Next Day solidified his alternative prowess. His final album, Blackstar, was released in early 2016 on his 69th birthday—and only days before his unexpected death. David bade a fond farewell to his fans in Blackstar's opening line: “Look up here, I’m in heaven.”
