Elvis Presley

He may not have been the first of his kind, but make no mistake, Elvis Presley was still undeniably the “King of Rock and Roll.” After kicking off his career at Sun Records in the early 1950s, Presley signed with RCA Victor in 1956 and his label debut “Heartbreak Hotel” became an instant chart-topper.

From there, the singer’s hits were virtually endless (“Don’t Be Cruel,” “All Shook Up,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”), while Presley’s larger-than-life personality grew with each passing year. His star power also translated to the big screen for some of the era’s most beloved films, including Jailhouse Rock and Blue Hawaii.

In 1968, after a seven-year concert hiatus, Presley staged a massively successful comeback television special, and in 1973, made history yet again as Aloha From Hawaii was the first concert broadcast around the world via satellite. He may have died prematurely in 1977 from the toll of prescription drug use (at just 42 years old), but is just as famous as ever thanks to a whirlwind of impersonators, memorabilia and his Graceland mansion/museum in Memphis.
