Jimi Hendrix

Photography by Baron Wolman

To my mind, this photograph perfectly achieved its goal to capture and share an ecstatic moment in the performance of a rock guitarist. This was also the most significant challenge I continued to face at Rolling Stone back in the day before video, before digital, before motor drives, before auto-focus and auto-exposure—how to communicate the spirit of a live concert in a single still image. Jimi was probably my favorite subject to photograph. Because of how he looked, because of the way he dressed, because of how he moved, both off and on stage—it was impossible to make a bad photograph of Hendrix.

Jimi Hendrix performs at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, February 1968.
