After spending her formative years in the Detroit suburbs, Madonna moved to New York and quickly became the best-selling female artist of all time. It all started with 1983’s self-titled debut, which firmly established the pop singer and songwriter in the clubs and the charts thanks to the era-defining singles “Holiday,” “Lucky Star,” and “Borderline.”

From there, Madonna ruled the ’80s, riding “Like a Virgin,” “Material Girl,” “Into the Groove,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” and “Like a Prayer” straight up the charts, while frequently accompanying her music with provocative videos. She also proved to be just as formidable a force on the silver screen, logging lead roles in Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy, and the Golden Globe Award-winning Evita.

This Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s later years also met with similar success, including the Grammy-winning albums Ray of Light in 1998 and Confessions on a Dance Floor in 2005. To this day, Madonna remains an active recording artist and continues to break her own touring attendance records with each stadium-filling spectacle.
