As distinctive a music icon as one is likely to find, Steven Patrick Morrissey is cherished by millions of fans for his crooning vocals and biting—but erudite—lyrics. First appearing on the British music scene in the mid-1980s as the lead singer of post-punk group the Smiths, Morrissey embarked upon a solo career after they disbanded in 1987. By the 1990s, he had established a markedly loyal fan base across the U.S. and Mexico.

Since 1988, Morrissey has released twelve albums, including the critically-acclaimed Your Arsenal, Years of Refusal, and World Peace is None of Your Business. He has performed around the world and in May 2019 staged a seven-night stand on Broadway. Morrissey has also written fiction and in 2013 published an inimitable autobiography—entitled, naturally, Autobiography.

The BBC has cited him as “one of the most important figures in British pop,” while in 2008 Rolling Stone magazine ranked him among the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.” This outspoken and charismatic singer continues to inspire a broad audience.
