Pink Floyd

Formed in 1965, the original Pink Floyd line-up consisted of lead singer/guitarist Syd Barrett, co-vocalist/bassist Roger Waters, co-vocalist/keyboard player Richard Wright, and drummer Nick Mason. Though the group made major strides in the psychedelic/prog/art-rock underground, the addition of David Gilmour on vocals and guitar two years later helped the players cross the threshold to mainstream success.

Following Barrett’s departure in 1968, the group spent the next few years cementing their sound, finally breaking commercial ground with 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon and follow-up Wish You Were Here in 1975. After 1979’s rock opera The Wall, the band truly reached epic heights, conquering stadiums with their massive touring productions.

Even after Waters stepped down in 1985, Pink Floyd continued to be a major recording and touring attraction, eventually reconvening in 2005 at the Live 8 charity concert. Although the deaths of Barrett and Wright make reunion plans impossible, periodic solo tours from Waters and Gilmour ensure that the group’s legacy lives on.
