Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones

Photography by Peter Sanders

Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones performs during “The Stones in the Park” festival at Hyde Park in London, 5th July 1969. This was less than a month after Rolling Stones co-founder Brian Jones officially quit the band—and just two days following his “death by misadventure.” The show was recast as a tribute to their long-time companion. A somber Mick Jagger addressed the crowd of nearly 250,000 with a short eulogy and thousands of white butterflies were released into the summer air.
