Whitney Houston

With record sales rapidly approaching 200 million, Whitney Houston is amongst the most commercially viable artists of her generation and is also regarded as one of the most gifted vocalists of all time. This soulful pop singer—with gospel roots—kicked off her career in 1985 with a self-titled debut that moved more than 25 million copies.

Throughout the rest of the decade, her hit parade proved unstoppable, including such signature songs as “How Will I Know,” “Greatest Love of All,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” and “One Moment in Time.” Houston also took the Super Bowl by storm in 1991 with her jaw-dropping version of the Star-Spangled Banner and made her acting debut in The Bodyguard the following year.

Fueled by the strength of the massive single “I Will Always Love You,” The Bodyguard soundtrack sold a staggering 44 million copies and made Houston a worldwide superstar. Such extraordinary fame came with a price, however, and after years of substance abuse, Houston passed away at a mere 48 in 2012.
