Dizzy Gillespie

Photography by Rick McGinnis

There was no way I wasn’t going to try and photograph Dizzy Gillespie when he came through town. Even forty years later, he was still synonymous with bebop and the revolution in jazz he helped pioneer with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, and others.

Dizzy Gillespie performs with the United Nations Orchestra at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, June 1988.
