Lou Reed
Photography by Mitchell Kearney
“Matching my three photo sessions with his mentor Andy Warhol, Lou Reed and I did a sequence of three photo sessions over the course of a year and a half. My first opportunity was at CBGB’s, with Lou hanging out at the quiet end of the bar meeting with younger musicians who had questions for him. All this put me at ease a few months later in front of Manny’s Music, when I got into a casual conversation with Lou while he ogled a guitar he “needed to finally finish Metal Machine Music with.” A charming conversationalist, as long as you don’t piss him off, Lou carried with him a genuine air of dignity and gentility which I will always admire him for.”
Lou Reed in front of Manny’s Music in New York, 1977.
