James Brown

Photography by Baron Wolman

You would have thought I was about to visit the Oval Office. Security in the San Francisco Civic Auditorium that New Year’s Eve was tight—the bodyguards grew taller and bigger as I made my way toward the inner sanctum. When I was finally admitted into James Brown’s dressing room I was warmly welcomed with food and drink and smiles. Like Jimi Hendrix, the relaxed James backstage was 180-degrees opposite from the James in performance. I knew I would soon be shooting the concert but I also knew I had a brief and singular opportunity to capture the “real” man, if any one photo can do that.
