Pete Townshend of the Who
Photography by Barrie Wentzell
“I went along with Chris Welch, writer for the Melody Maker, to interview Pete who wanted to tell us about his new idea for a “concept album.” It was a cold and dark day and after much chat about music, art, and the guru—Meha Babba—he told us about this story of a deaf, dumb, and blind kid that he was working on. As I was taking this shot near the window in the failing light, I said that it seemed rather a sad and depressing theme and that I couldn’t see how it would be accepted or could become a hit. Shows how much I knew since as destiny was to show, Tommy became the Who’s biggest and best success!”
